Introduction

Are you obese or overweight?

If you are one, you are not alone. An estimated 1.1 billion adults are overweight and 312 million are obese and the world is facing an obesity epidemic. Obesity lessens the quality of your life and even shortens it as you are more likely to develop a number of potentially serious health problems, including:

Definition

Obesity is defined as having an excess amount of body fat.
Body fat is of 3 types:

Causes

Apart from the genetic and hormonal influences on your weight, obesity occurs when your calorie intake exceeds the amount of calories you spend through your normal daily activities. These excess calories are stored in your body as fat.
Obesity results from inactivity, unhealthy diet, irregular eating habits and certain medications. Other contributing factors are medical problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. Even arthritis causes obesity as this can result in decreased activity. Pregnancy is another contributing factor.

Prevention

Exercise regularly. Fast walking or swimming is a good option.
Eat healthy. Consume low calorific and nutrient rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  Avoid saturated fat. Limit alcohol and sweets. Know your body type and follow the recommended diet.
Avoid food traps, monitor your weight regularly and be persistent.
